To Euro or not to Euro?

The best way I can explain the Euronymphing technique is that the technique requires the angler to be extremely focused and centred. To catch a lot of fish the angler must be on alert through all phases of the technique, implementing controlled but deliberate movements, focusing on every phase of the drift.

Euro nymphing offers the angler a lot of varied styles, techniques and/or processes, such as sighter angles and drift speeds to find the way the fish want the fly.

Euronymphing is highly visual and instinctual, if you can not see what’s going on, it is going to be difficult to catch fish. Some folks rely solely on feel, I rely on sight, feel and the environment (river and river conditions - run, riffle, glide etc).

The anglers level of intensity and focus can correlate to success, on a number of occasions my eyes have wondered away from focusing on the sighter to feel a strike that split second too late and therefore missing the fish.

Euro nymphing techniques offer the angler the ability to see more takes, and the overall behaviour of feeding trout.

With in the broad term “Euro Nymphing” used there are a lot of nuances, different styles, methods, even some cool techniques other than just lobbing a weighted nymph into the river.

That been said all it can take is a good leader (micro leader’s my preferred) and a properly weighted nymph for the river conditions and flow rate to see some productivity and success, but if you want to catch even more fish it takes time and experience along with the right mindset to learn the depths of Euronymphing.

Reel Fly Fishing specialise in Euronymphing techniques and use the highest quality gear from Hanak Competition rods and reels, to custom tied and weighted flies for the specific rivers we fish.

As a guide I don’t stop learning and I have been lucky enough to fish with some high level fishermen and women throughout my years, developing my own styles, techniques and instincts while fishing New South Wales and Victorian Waters.

If you want to catch more fish book a session with Grant from Reel Fly Fishing, you’ll learn and understand the drifts, how to anchor nymphs in fast runs, some cool casting methods and much more, but most of all the guided session will see your knowledge and confidence soar.
